Detroit is doing more β but not everywhere, and not all at once
Detroit is doing more β but not everywhere, and not all at once
Property crime is down nearly 15% from last year. Rental registrations are climbing. Building permits had a strong March. On paper, the city looks like it's moving.
But drug crimes ticked up last month. 911 call volume jumped 23%. And most of the housing progress is concentrated on the west side.
The data isn't bad. It's just honest β and honesty means reading the whole thing.
Property Crime Is Down 15% β And That's Not a Fluke
Property crime drop is holding β for now
Detroit has logged 4,535 property crime incidents so far this year. That's down nearly 15% from the same point last year. The drop has held across multiple months, which makes it harder to dismiss.
March alone came in at 1,500 incidents β still lower than last March. That's not a one-week blip. That's a trend with receipts.
Detroit's 911 Call Volume Just Jumped 23% β Here's What That Actually Means
911 volume is up β here's the nuance
Detroit police fielded 26,669 calls last month. That's one call every 100 seconds, and it's 23% higher than last year. That number sounds alarming.
But part of the jump reflects better reporting and app-based intake, not necessarily more emergencies. Still β more calls means more pressure on dispatch and response times residents actually feel.
March Rental Registrations Hit 815, and the West Side Did the Heavy Lifting
Rental registrations up β west side carrying the load
Detroit issued 815 rental registrations in March, up from 725 in February. That's landlords getting on the books β which matters for tenant protections and code enforcement.
But the gains weren't citywide. Brewster Homes, Evergreen, and Lahser corridors drove the increase. If your neighborhood isn't on that list, this month's progress didn't reach you.
Detroit's Building Permit Pace Is Slower Than Last Year β But March Just Flipped the Script
Permits are behind β but March was a bright spot
Detroit has processed 514 building permits so far this year. That's 15% below this point last year. Slower permitting means slower construction, slower rehab, slower everything.
March bucked the trend β 199 permits, actually beating last March by 13%. One good month doesn't fix a slow year, but it's worth watching whether it holds.
Detroit Drug Crime Is Down Big β But the Last Month Tells a Different Story
Drug crimes down yearly β but March just reversed course
Year over year, drug crimes dropped 16% β from 266 to 221 cases. That's a real number and a real improvement. But March came in 17% higher than February.
One month doesn't erase a year of progress. But it's a reminder that trends don't move in straight lines β and that the west side and multi-district spread of recent cases deserves a closer look.
