Mayor Johnson Cut the Ribbon. Old Town Got a Chophouse.

April 5, 2026๐ŸŒ† Chicago, Illinois ยท District 2

The L Station Chophouse opened March 30 at 455 W North Ave in Old Town โ€” and Mayor Brandon Johnson showed up for the ribbon-cutting. The owner already runs the original L Station soul food spot in the Loop. This second concept goes upscale: prime steaks, Miami-Vegas vibes, dinner only. Ward 2 just got a lot more expensive.

A Steakhouse With a Mayoral Endorsement

The L Station Chophouse opened its doors on March 30, 2026, at 455 W North Ave in Old Town โ€” and it didn't do so quietly. Mayor Brandon Johnson attended the grand opening ribbon-cutting, according to Hoodline. That's the kind of civic endorsement that tends to get a restaurant noticed fast, whether or not the steaks earn it on their own merits.

The Concept: Loop Soul Food Goes Upscale

The owner behind this venture already operates the original L Station at 186 N Wells Street in the Loop, a soul food concept that debuted in November 2022. The Chophouse is a deliberate pivot โ€” prime steaks inspired by Miami and Las Vegas upscale dining, smart casual dress code, valet parking, and dinner-only hours (Wednesday through Sunday, 4 PM onward). It's a different lane entirely, and the license filing โ€” a Consumption on Premises - Incidental Activity license โ€” confirms the liquor component is already in place.

Old Town's Evolving Restaurant Scene

North Avenue in Old Town has long been a mixed corridor โ€” neighborhood bars, casual spots, a few higher-end holdouts. A new upscale chophouse with political visibility and an established operator behind it is a meaningful addition. Ward 2 covers a swath of the Near North Side including Old Town, and this kind of investment signals continued confidence in the area's dining market even as costs across the city keep climbing.

Reservations are available via OpenTable. For a restaurant that just opened, the early buzz is real โ€” and the mayoral photo op doesn't hurt.
